Marketo CEO Steve Lucas has announced his departure from Adobe, roughly one year after the company signed a definitive agreement to purchase Marketo for $4.75 billion.

“It’s times like these that I think about the phrase ‘it’s not personal, it’s just business.’ I’ve come to believe whomever coined that phrase got it wrong, as being part of a company is one of the most personal things you can undertake,” said Lucas.

In October 2016, Lucas was announced as CEO at Marketo after having a successful career at both SAP and Salesforce. As part of Marketo’s deal with Adobe in 2018, Lucas went on to join Adobe’s senior leadership team.

Following his departure from Adobe, Lucas only had positive things to say about Adobe in a recent blog post, including thanking Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe Systems, for the incredible opportunity of being part of the organization.

“I’m also grateful for the awesome leadership team at Adobe and the passion they feel around Marketo & B2B. This has been and always will be what wins the day — passion for purpose,” said Lucas.

Lucas further stated that he was grateful for the chance to lead Marketo as a high-growth company prior to the acquisition and through the integration process with Adobe.

“More than anything I feel a deep sense of gratitude right now. Most of all, I’m grateful for the many friendships forged, which I treasure and will never let expire,” said Lucas.
