Key Takeaways
- Requiring reps to hit a scoring benchmark against AI buyers before touching qualified leads doubled lead volume and stopped burning real opportunities on untrained callers.
- Automated call review replaced selective, manual coaching, cutting one operator’s daily tracking time to 30 minutes while every live call finally got scored.
Hailie Miller runs three businesses that rely on phone interactions, yet none had a reliable way to train the people making the calls.
Miller’s three businesses are run on one system: a portfolio of 70 Airbnb short-term rentals, a coaching program that teaches others to build in the space, and a virtual-assistant placement agency. Each one leans on human performance over the phone: cold callers open the pipeline, guest-service reps protect the reputation and then closing the deal.
One weak link on any of those calls costs real money. That made phone performance the one problem Miller couldn’t afford to leave to chance.
The Problem: Training That Never Happened
While the intent to coach was there, the system wasn’t. New employees went straight to real, qualified leads on day one, script in hand, with no practice. They learned on paid opportunities, burning leads while they figured out what to say. Cold callers recorded their calls, but almost none got reviewed. By Miller’s count, about four calls out of everything her team were recorded; guest-service calls weren’t tracked at all.
“I wasn’t even listening to them,” Miller said. While she thought she was coaching, most calls went out unpracticed and came back unreviewed.
What Is Kendo AI and How Does It Work?
Miler put all three teams on Kendo AI’s practice-score-review loop, an all-in-one sales training and management platform that combines AI roleplay, automated call review, and AI-powered sales management in a single system. New reps drill against AI buyers that push back with real objections.
Every live and practice call gets scored against methodology or presets like BANT, MEDDPICC and NEPQ. Each rep builds a skill profile that drives the next round of targeted practice, while an AI sales manager monitors every call for red flags and missed opportunities.
Miller put all three teams on one Kendo loop: practice, score, leaderboard and a weekly review.
The Solution
Cold callers now complete one hour of AI practice per shift before touching a live lead, drilling against AI buyers that answer every response with another objection. Guest-service scenarios get rebuilt from whatever went wrong on a real call, so a fix gets trained rather than mentioned once. Coaching students rehearse against AI prospects loaded with the objections they’ll actually hear. Each employee has to hit a score before working a qualified lead.
“Instead of blowing through qualified leads their first day, I have them practice inside of Kendo with my trained prospects on different things that are really big objections when you come into the industry,” Miller said.
The practice standard is the part she won’t move on, stating “all the cold callers, they use Kendo for one hour of practice every single day of their shift. They’ve been with me for over a year now, but I still, every single day, I don’t care. One hour every day.”
Every live call comes back as a written summary of strengths, weaknesses and a next step instead of a raw recording. Because the AI reviews every call, tracking stopped being selective.
The Results: 100% Lead Volume Increase and 30-Minute Reviews
Miller reported lead volume is up 100%, which she attributes to sharper cold callers on the phone. Her own tracking time dropped to about 30 minutes a day, replacing manual review that used to mean nothing got reviewed at all.
“With the AI, it’s harder than if you actually picked up the phone and called a lead, because no matter what you say, there is another objection,” Miller said. “So if you can master Kendo and score 80, 90, 100%, by the time you go pick up the call, you’re going to know everything to say.”
Why Kendo AI Trains Humans Instead of Replacing Them
Most AI in sales points at removing the human from the sale. Kendo points it the other way, at training and ramping the humans who still close the deals. Volume goes to the AI, judgment stays with the manager. An AI can run more practice calls in a week than a manager could in a quarter and score every live call on top of it, but it can’t decide which rep is ready for premium leads. That call stays human, and it gets easier when every rep has a scorecard behind them.
Miller has held that cadence for more than a year as one of Kendo’s earliest customers.
“What doesn’t get tracked doesn’t get improved,” said Miller. “You think you’re tracking. You think you’re doing well. As soon as you turn on proper tracking, people realize, ‘Oh, I didn’t realize how bad we were at this.'”
